This is going to happen to us a bit, and it happened today.

OpenAI has unleashed its latest powerhouse models, o1-preview and 01-mini today and suddenly we're all asking ourselves the same question: Do we jump ship to these new model?

Does this mean anything for HR?

While the impact on HR may not be immediately apparent, it's crucial to understand the potential of these new models:

  1. Complex Problem Solving: The o1-preview model is designed to tackle intricate issues with a more thorough analytical approach. This could be particularly valuable for:
    • Workforce planning
    • Predictive analytics in talent management
    • Comprehensive policy analysis
  2. Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness: The o1-mini model offers a balance of capability and affordability, potentially making advanced AI tools more accessible to HR departments of all sizes. That being said, most HR users are using the ChatGPT subscription of $20 a month, so the cost of the API use is kinda irrelevant.
  3. Enhanced Data Interpretation: These models excel at processing and interpreting large datasets, which could revolutionize how we approach:
    • Employee engagement surveys
    • Performance metrics analysis
    • Talent acquisition strategies

Real-world application

To illustrate, I tested our HR Metrics Storytelling prompt across different models. Despite the focus in all the press releases around coding, math and science, the o1-preview model produced this compelling opening:

"What if the key to unlocking our company's next phase of growth isn't found in market trends or financial forecasts, but within our own workforce data?"

I would probably get similar from GPT-4o and maybe even better narrative from Claude's Sonnet 3.5 - but it's fun to see the differences.

Next steps for HR professionals

  1. Stay Informed: Keep abreast of these LLM model advancements and their potential applications in HR, maybe switch which application you use based on the use case?
  2. Experiment: Test these new models with your specific HR use cases to determine how they respond to your prompts.
  3. Collaborate: Share your findings with peers. Your experiences could be invaluable to the HR community.
